Photo Contest Winners Announced

Blackstone Heritage Corridor, Inc. has announced the winners of the 2015 Calendar Photo Contest. The organization is producing an informative calendar with great pictures, moon phases, holidays and interesting tidbits about the history, flora and fauna of the National Heritage Corridor. The contest drew over 100 entries in just two weeks. Twelve monthly photographs and one cover shot capturing the unique spirit of the region were selected in a blind competition.

“We were amazed at both the quality and variety of photos that were submitted for the contest,” remarked Charlene Perkins Cutler, executive director of Blackstone Heritage Corridor, Inc. “There was a terrific response to the contest and it was very difficult to select only 13 for the calendar.”

The 2015 in the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor© will include the work of James Owens from Uxbridge, MA, whose breath-taking picture “Frosty Berries,” the January illustration, was taken in Whitinsville, MA. The wintry calm of the Blackstone Canal in N. Uxbridge, MA, will grace the page for February and was submitted by Carol Dandrade of Uxbridge. Spring is evident in the snow melt captured in “Blackstone Power,” photographed by Edd Cote of Millbury, MA, and featured in March.

The Slater Mill and its park were photographed by Karen Johnson-Nieuwendijk in Pawtucket, RI, and illustrates April. The “Crown & Eagle Mill” in Uxbridge, MA, was submitted by Daniel Wenc of Whitinsville, MA, and chosen for May. A serene morning, “Voss Farm Sunrise,” was photographed by James Owens of Uxbridge, MA, and selected for the month of June.

The July illustration is “Cogwell Tower,” taken by Brett Henrikson, capturing a night of fireworks in Central Falls, RI. Anthony Shepherd from E. Providence, RI, submitted a colorful late summer view of kayakers enjoying the National Heritage Corridor. The Blackstone River Bikeway on the border of Cumberland and Lincoln, RI, will grace September, the photo provided by Dennis DiMauro, Jr. of Cumberland, RI.

Brilliant autumn colors and the stonework of Manville Bridge Dam are the subject of the October photo taken by Therese Miller of Manville, RI. Representing the rich history of the region, “Working at Cotton” by Carol Dandrade from Pawtucket, RI, illustrates November with gears, belts and unspun cotton. The serenity of the holiday season was captured by Frances Guevremont of Lincoln, RI, in the wintery covered bridge from the entrance to Lincoln Woods, Lincoln, RI.

The coveted cover shot was submitted by Edd Cote of Millbury, MA. Entitled “Manchaug Falls,” the photograph captures the delicate beauty of early spring by the water where the first maple leaves are in evidence. “It is so exceptional that the viewer can almost reach out and touch the gentle cascade of water over the stonework,” noted Ms. Cutler.
